My Story with Sugar Addiction
20 years ago I was twice my present size, severely depressed and totally addicted to sugar.
My days consisted of waking up feeling exhausted, regardless of how much sleep I’d had, and immediately turning to sugar to make myself feel better.
Then I would judge myself for eating all that sugar which would just make me feel worse. So I continued to eat more sugar. This up and down cycle continued and the pounds kept pilling on.
I had tried every diet under the sun to lose weight.
Low carb, high carb, paleo, atkins, weight watchers. I even used to go to a gym where the machines would move your body for you! Nothing worked long-term and it left me feeling hopeless and deeply unhappy.
When I felt hopeless about my weight, I would eat sugar to make myself feel better, knowing full well that it was only making things worse.
I was trapped in a Sweet Prison.
This cycle of eating eventually culminated in serious depression, where I contemplated suicide.
I knew something drastic had to change.

Finding Sweet Freedom
I went on to lose 70lbs and have kept it off for the last 20 years. But more importantly, I am now free from sugar addiction.
Today, I can walk past my favourite treats (that used to be irresistible to me!) without experiencing any sugar cravings.
I found freedom.
Rebuilding my Relationship with Food
Normal diets just did not work for me. I had some success with losing weight in the past, but would usually put it back on within a few weeks.
I later found out that 95% of people who try a restrictive diet end up putting the weight back on within a year.
I knew a diet wasn’t going to work. I had to completely change my relationship with food – mentally, emotional, physically and spiritually.
For years I was using processed foods like sugar as a way of suppressing my emotions. Sugar was that friend I could always turn to for comfort anytime I was feeling sad, lonely or angry. It was my crutch.
I knew another diet wasn’t going to work. I had to address my emotional eating habits, my thinking patterns around food, and my emotional dependancy on sugar.
Over the course of 10 years, I developed strategies to rebuild my relationship with food holistically.
I went beyond the diet mentality of forcing myself to eat a certain way, and instead focused on healing my behaviour around food.
Once I started nourishing myself mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually, quitting sugar became a piece of cake (no pun intended!)
